FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Why do I need OMEGA-fortified foods or dietary supplements?
2. How much OMEGA-3 does my body need?
Many experts recommend 1000 mg of OMEGA-3 per day. Consult your healthcare provider, or consult the Mayo Clinic’s Dosing Page to see current thinking on EPA/DHA OMEGA-3 dosing for common health conditions.
3. Why are balanced OMEGA-3s important?
The right amount—and proper balance of OMEGAs—is essential for your overall health. OMEGA-3s counterbalance the inflammatory OMEGA-6 saturated fats that are consumed through processed and prepared foods, especially plant-based oils.
4. What is an ideal balance of OMEGAs?
An ideal ratio of OMEGA-6 to OMEGA-3 is from 1:1 to 4:1. Today’s average Western diet is in the 20:1 range—dramatically outside recommended ranges!
5. What is the difference between OMEGA-6 and OMEGA-3?
While both are polyunsaturated fatty acids, OMEGA-6 and OMEGA-3 impact the body differently. OMEGA-3 is anti-inflammatory and supports many critical health functions, while OMEGA-6 is pro-inflammatory, leading to many health concerns relating to the heart, immune system and brain.
6. What causes unhealthy levels of OMEGA-6?
Popular foods in most American diets are behind high OMEGA-6 levels. High OMEGA-6 levels are linked to consuming corn, soybean and sunflower oil, processed foods, fast and fried foods, margarine, mayonnaise, cookies, crackers, chips, candy and other popular foods in the Western diet.
7. Why is too much OMEGA-6 detrimental to health?
Western diets are loaded with inflammatory OMEGA-6 fatty acids, which have been linked to many degenerative diseases. Interestingly, these diseases have escalated at the same pace as the growth of OMEGA-6 in our diets, which has become much more dominant in today’s foods. In recent studies, consuming too much OMEGA-6 has been connected to:
- Chronic inflammation
- Arthritis
- Cancer
- Heart disease
- Depression
- Asthma
- Alzheimer’s
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Obesity
- Lupus
- Schizophrenia
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
- Postpartum depression
8. How can I find out my balance of OMEGA-3s to OMEGA-6s?
A simple test can identify a baseline of your current OMEGA ratio. This test is available from your physician, or use our Holman OMEGA-3 Test, a home test kit which you can order online. By establishing your initial baseline, then retesting in several months, you can monitor your progress of achieving a healthy balance of OMEGAs.
9. What is the difference between ALA, EPA and DHA OMEGA-3?
There are three types of OMEGA-3, which differ on a molecular level. ALA is a “short chain” molecule that comes from plant sources like chia and flax, meaning that the body must first convert it for use. OMEGA-3 EPA and DHA, found in marine sources, are “long chain” OMEGAs, already in a form the body can use. Both OMEGAs are important for holistic health. Often referred to as “marine-based” OMEGA, these long chain EPA/DHA fatty acids are found in salmon, krill, herring, sardines, smelt, anchovies, mackerel and other marine-based organisms.
10. Why is marine-based OMEGA better than other sources?
Even careful label readers can find it hard to determine if their products contain marine-based (EPA/DHA) or plant-based (ALA) OMEGA-3s. Most food products today are ALA-based. While good for you, only 5% of ALA from plants like flax and chia can be converted to EPA/DHA by your body! But OMEGA-3 EPA/DHA fatty acids, found in fish and marine-based organisms, are easier to absorb, providing many powerful health benefits.
11. What is the source of Omega Foods’ marine-based OMEGA-3 oils?
The source of fish oil is an important quality consideration. Our fish oil is sourced from wild-caught fish from the cold waters of the Arctic Seas, which is a pure, high-quality, sustainable source. Learn more here.
12. How are our OMEGA-3 foods different from ones already on the market?
Our foods have more OMEGA-3 per serving. Our one-of-a-kind patented TruMega+™ technology allows us to add industry-leading amounts of marine-based OMEGA-3 EPA/DHA into foods without affecting their taste.
13. Do your food products have a fishy aftertaste?
No. Our products have a great natural taste, with flavor that matches or exceeds that of non-OMEGA-3 enriched foods. That’s because our TruMega+™ oil has been specially stabilized and formulated to add high levels of OMEGA to our food products without any fishy taste.
14. Does your TruMega® fish oil supplement have a fishy odor or taste?
Our TruMega fish oil is tasteless and odorless. The protocols from the moment the fish are caught to the oil arriving at your doorstep ensure a fresh, high quality product.
15. Why not just take fish oil capsules or eat oily fish?
The high levels of OMEGAs in Omega Foods® products exceed the amounts found in natural food sources per serving—and not everyone wants to rely on taking supplements every day. For those who don’t like capsules, our TruMega® Fish Oil is a pure, flavorless option that can be taken by spoon or blended into beverages and smoothies. Bottom line, it’s easier to get OMEGA-3 through a variety of everyday food sources or oil supplements that are easily absorbed, used by the body and of the highest quality.
16. What products do you have on the market now?
Currently, we offer three varieties of Culinary Sauce in Tomato Basil, Marinara and Santa Fe Chipotle flavors, as well as The Better Olive Oil – all high-quality products enriched with OMEGA-3s.
17. What types of foods are you bringing to market in the future?
